A Quick Visit to the Tacoma Art Museum

Ever since a 40% complete skeleton of a female Australopithecus afarensis was discovered in 1974, in Ethiopia, she’s been put on a pedestal both figuratively and literally. A PNW artist created this life-size sculpture of her, giving her a strong upper body and legs in accordance with current theories that she walked a lot, but also climbed trees.

There are a lot of glass exhibits because Tacoma also hosts a famous glass museum and working foundry.

This curious display fills an inaccessible plaza within the building. The stones were acquired from a village in China, where they served as a roadway constructed 500 years ago. The exhibit is designed to represent a wave on the surface of Commencement Bay.
